Can Your Diet Help Prevent Skin Cancer?
Posted by Geoff Beaty
on 9 October 2021
The major cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or from tanning machines.
About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are associated with solar UV.
UV exposure generates free radicals, unstable, nasty little oxygen molecules that produce inflammation and damage cell function and your skin’s DNA.
This DNA damage can cause changes in your genes called mutations that lead to skin cancer.
Studies have shown that substances called antiox...

Mitochondria Are More Than The Cell's Powerhouse
Posted by Geoff Beaty
on 1 October 2021
Mitochondria are now recognised beyond their role as the cell’s “powerhouse”.
A systematic review on the mitochondria in psychological stress describes the mitochondria as subcellular organelles that sustain life through energy transformation and intracellular signalling, with research showing mitochondria changes directly impact systemic metabolic regulation, brain function, immunity, ageing and life-span.
Emerging research further supports the important role of the mitoc...

C for CELANDINE
Posted by Geoff Beaty
on 23 September 2021
A bitter cholagogue and antispasmodic herb, used to treat spasms of the gastrointestinal tract and bile duct, celandine is said to clean the gall bladder and stimulate bile flow in cases of hepatitis, jaundice and gall stones.
It is often used as an example of the doctrine of signatures, the concept that a plant resembles the condition or part of the body that it can heal, because the bright, yellowy, orange sap resembles bile.
This sap is also used topically, twice daily, for viral warts a...

Melatonin For More Than Sleep
Posted by Geoff Beaty
on 23 September 2021
Melatonin is a hormone produced by our pineal gland, which is roughly located in the centre of our brain.
Melatonin production follows a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels being produced at night while we sleep.
Night time exposure to light can significantly decrease melatonin production, and multiple observational studies have linked night shift work to the development of breast cancer.
Interestingly, women with breast cancer in Denmark can now receive financial compensation if, wi...

Dirty Dozen #2: Dioxin
Posted by Geoff Beaty
on 12 September 2021
Dioxins are multi-taskers… but not in a good way!
They form during many industrial processes when chlorine or bromine are burned in the presence of carbon and oxygen.
Dioxins can disrupt the delicate signalling systems of male and female sex hormones in the body.
This is a bad thing!
Here’s why:
Recent research has shown that exposure to low levels of dioxin in the womb and early in life can permanently affect sperm quality and lower sperm count in men during their prime rep...
